Acclimatisation can be defined as the process wherein our body gets adapted to certain climatic conditions to maintain its metabolism and required mechanism to keep us alive.
With attaining greater height during a Leh Ladakh tour, the oxygen level also decreases. However, since our body requires a certain amount of oxygen intake, we tend to breathe in more frequently or hastily. The increase in our breathing rate, though compensates the lack of oxygen, it makes our body tired and also increases the chances of becoming fatigue.
To overcome this adverse situation, our body needs to get adapted to low temperatures or high altitudes. This entire process, in scientific terms, is defined as acclimatisation
Acute Mountain Sickness is one of the most common sickness caused by altitude gain. As climbers ascend upward, oxygen level or pressure starts reducing drastically. Due to lack of oxygen in the blood system, climbers can get exposed to a series of sickness. These ailments or sickness are collectively called as Acute Mountain Sickness.
Ladakh is located at high altitude, nearly 11,500 feet above sea level. At this altitude people often find difficulty in breathing or are likely to fall prey to altitude sickness. It happens due to a low level of atmospheric oxygen. It is advisable to give yourself enough time to acclimatize before engaging in any physical activity.
Some common symptoms of high altitude sickness include giddiness, loss of appetite, lack of sleep and difficulty in breathing. The best way to get acclimatize in Ladakh is a natural rest for at least 48 hours.
The months from mid-September to mid-October are considered to be the best season to enjoy the stunning beauty of the landscape of Ladakh and Leh. The month of March is considered to be the best time to visit Ladakh for adventure trip. While the months from April to mid-May remain the peak season for Ladakh tourism.
There are varieties of accommodations available in Ladakh. The region is sprawling with the innumerable hotels, guest houses, homestays, camps, and hostels. People can easily find accommodation in Ladakh without any hassle.
The ideal time depends on your plan and itinerary. Generally, it needs 5 to 10 days to cover the major destinations in Ladakh. If trekking is your main goal then you may have to increase the duration as some long trekking trails require a more prolonged time to complete the tour.
T-shirts and shorts are good clothing options during the daytime but after the sunsets the climate gets chilly and one requires a jacket and pullover. If you are trekking to the peaks of 4000 meters above sea level, you need warm woolen clothes. Rain and snowfall can take place in June and July and if you are travelling in this season then you should carry windcheaters and raincoats. If you are into trekking, a pair of waterproof shoes is a must.
BSNL, AIRTEL and AIRCEL networks are available and work in Leh and Ladakh. However, BSNL is the one that works the best. Please note that prepaid sims DO NOT work at all in Ladakh.
Also, Electricity can be an issue while in Ladakh. Try to keep your gadgets and devices charged or charge them whenever you have access to electricity.
Though the Indian Army keeps the world’s highest motorable road open through the year, it may not necessarily be possible to travel all year round. The best time to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and drive through is between April and June and then from September to October. The monsoon months in between make the stretch extremely treacherous, and in the months post November it goes under a blanket of snow. The road opens at 09:00 am and shuts by 05:00 pm everyday.
