Sikkim can be reached by flight, regular flights are of all carriers are available up to Bagdogra airport. From airport frequent pre-paid taxis are available to Sikkim. By rail nearest railway station is new jalpaiguri station (NJP). From NJP frequent pre-paid taxis are available to Sikkim. Buses are also available from Siliguri located near NJP.
Bagdogra airport to Gangtok is 123 kms. From New jalpaiguri to Gangtok is 125 kms.
The best time to visit Sikkim is during March, April, May and September, October, November and early December.
In addition to Indian Visa one need to apply for Sikkim Inner Line Permit (ILP) in order to visit Sikkim. This 15 or 30 days permit can be obtained free of charge from the Indian Consulate in your country while applying for your Indian Visa, however some for the European countries do charge some fees for the Sikkim ILP. You can also acquire ILPs at Rangpo and Melli check post at the time of your entry to Sikkim for free of cost. One can also obtain the Sikkim Inner Line Permits from the Sikkim Tourism Office at following places in India – KOLKATTA, MUMBAI & DELHI.
FOR INDIAN NATIONALS:
No inner line permits or such formalities are needed to enter Sikkim but one should always carry with him, any Indian identification documents, like either Voter ID card, Pan Card, Passport etc. This identification documents are most for the one planning to do tours or trekking in any part of Sikkim Himalayas.
It depends on the time of year you’re visiting Sikkim. In winters, it will be very cold at high altitudes and wearing thermal is highly recommended if you’re not used to cold climatic conditions. Whereas in summers, the temperature in Gangtok would be normal i.e. manageable without jackets and in North Sikkim you can manage with one layer of warm clothes.
Since Nathula and Gurudongmar Lake are in international border areas, hence, domestic tourist as well as locals need permit to visit these areas. Permit for Nathula and Gurudongmar Lake are issued by Tourism and Civil Aviation Department. Domestic tourists are to contact travel agents listed inwww.sikkimtourism.gov.in/Webforms/General/TATO/TATO_List.aspx to get permits from Tourism Department.
Bikers need special permit to ply in protected areas; the permit is issued by the Home Deptt. & ADGP Check Post. Private vehicles are not allowed in protected areas.
OCI holders need Inner Line permits to visit Sikkim on the strength of a valid Indian visa.
Best places to visit in Gangtok includes Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La Pass, Hanuman Tok, Banjhakri Falls, Rumtek Monastery, Kabi Town, and Himalayan Zoological Park.
Mahatma Gandhi Road, Lal Bazaar, New Market, Old Market, and Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms are some of the famous markets to shop in Gangtok.
One should buy canvas and wall hanging, thangkas, semi-precious stone jewelry, alpine cheese, Sikkim tea, and hand-woven jackets from Gangtok.
